Fighting is threatening to escalate between the Myanmar military and an ethnic armed group seeking self-determination in Rakhine state, which is still struggling to recover from the violence that caused some 700,000 refugees to flee.

In a statement released on Saturday night, the Arakan Army (AA), which is made up of ethnic Rakhines, said the Myanmar military used helicopters to launch bomb attacks that afternoon, and vowed to “take the necessary action” if it continued.
