Myanmar’s Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Minister Win Myat Aye says more time is needed to verify refugees’ identities before beginning the repatriation of Rohingya refugees.

In an interview with the US-based broadcaster Radio Free Asia on Friday, he said repatriation was delayed as refugees did not fill up the forms in line with the agreement between Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Myat Aye is set to visit Bangladesh on April 11-12. He will meet with officials from the Bangladesh Foreign and Home Ministry to discuss the details of repatriation.

“That’s why we need more time to verify people. We sent a list of those whom we could verify to Bangladesh, but we haven’t heard anything back yet,” Myat Aye said.

“We will talk about it when I am in Bangladesh,” Myat Aye added.

Asked whether Myanmar will work with UN agencies on the Rohingya issue, the minister said in the Rohingya repatriation agreement, his government already said so.
